How big should your dining table be?
Seats: allow about 24″ (60 cm) of table edge per person.
Space: leave at least 36″ (90 cm) between the table edge and the wall or other furniture so chairs can be pulled out.
Shape: round and oval tables suit smaller rooms and make conversation easier; rectangular tables suit long rooms and bigger groups. Pedestal and trestle bases give more legroom than corner legs.
Top: sintered stone is very hard and resists heat and scratches; wood is warmer and can be refinished; marble needs coasters and regular sealing.
Lighting over the table: a chandelier about half to two thirds of the table width, hung 30–36″ (76–91 cm) above it. See our chandelier size guide.
