Choosing the right lamp

Table and bedside lamps: when you sit beside it, the bottom of the shade should be roughly at eye level, so the bulb is not in your eyes. The lamp plus the table usually come to about 58–64″ (147–163 cm) from the floor.

Floor lamps: arc lamps reach over a sofa or chair; uplighters bounce light off the ceiling; reading lamps with an adjustable head direct light onto a book.

Desk lamps: an adjustable arm lets you aim the light at your work. See desk lamps.

Plug-in lamps come with a plug for your country. Each lamp lists its bulb base and whether a bulb is included.

Do lamps need any wiring?
No. Table, floor and desk lamps plug into a wall socket.
Are bulbs included?
On most lamps, no. Most take a standard E26/E27 (medium) bulb, and the bulb base is listed in the specifications.
Can I dim them?
Most are listed as dimmable when used with a dimmable bulb.
What shade materials are available?
Glass, fabric and metal shades are the most common, including Tiffany-style stained-glass shades.
