Short answer

In most rooms, hang wall sconces with the centre about 60-66" (152-168 cm) above the floor, around eye level, so the light is soft and the bulb is not in your eyes. Beside a bathroom mirror, place them at about face height and 36-40" (91-102 cm) apart.

01

Why eye level?

At around eye level, a sconce lights the wall and the room without glare. Too low and it looks like a lamp that has slipped; too high and it lights the ceiling instead of the space.

02

How far should a sconce stick out from the wall?

In hallways and on stairs, choose slim sconces so people do not knock into them. In the US, accessibility rules limit wall fittings between 27" and 80" (69-203 cm) above the floor to 4" (10 cm) of projection in walkways. Each of our wall lights lists its depth in the specifications.

03

How do I light a bathroom mirror well?

Light from both sides of the mirror at face height gives even light without shadows under the eyes and chin, which is best for shaving and make-up. A single light above the mirror is the next best option. Choose fittings rated for damp locations near baths and showers.

04

Hard-wired or plug-in?

Most of our wall lights are hard-wired and should be installed by a qualified electrician, ideally before walls are painted or tiled. We also have a smaller range of plug-in, battery and solar wall lights that need no wiring.

05

What about bulbs?

Warm white (2700-3000K) suits living rooms and bedrooms; neutral white (about 4000K) is good for bathroom mirrors and task lighting. Each product lists the bulb base, the maximum wattage and whether bulbs are included, and is supplied for your country's voltage.
